Passive Noise Isolation
Our efficient design provides a cleanly sealed off fit that ensures upwards of 30dB of passive noise isolation. This allows you to hear your music much more clearly, block out unwanted noise, save your eardrums from damage and immerse yourself in music. You also don’t hear the annoying “hmm” like with “noise canceling” headphones.

Dynamic Audio:

Studies have shown that even a slight increase of pace and volume in music can affect your athletic productivity substantially. For an enhanced workout experience DYNAMIC AUDIO provides a custom playlist responsive to your body vitals. Taking into account previous records plus current factors such as your heart rate, your music will change in pace and volume appropriately.

For example: You select your “Back and Biceps” playlist with a 45 minute session. The App starts your music at a warm-up pace and increases steadily as time elapses. Music intensity such as volume and speed increase in peaks for a more dynamic workout before coming down for the cool-off.

I’ve got several licenses for Office and Outlook but I’m not sure which one which ones I’ve used and which ones are free.
How can I find out which license I’ve used for which computer and how can I change the key if needed?

While you could simply try one of your Product/License Keys and see if it gets accepted, it’s not a very sophisticated approach. The proper method to determine or change the Product Key depends on your version of Office or Outlook. However, for either version there is no need to completely reinstall Office.

Determine the Product Key
Determining the used Product Key when using Office 2007 or previous isn’t directly supported by Microsoft. However, you can use a little program called Magic Jelly Bean Keyfinder to find out your used Product Key. Simply install and run the application to find out the Product Key (note: during the installation, there will be a prompt to also install a sponsored application which you can choose not to install).

If you are using Office 2010 or Office 2013, then this application will not work. However, Office 2010 and Office 2013 already include a vbs-script which will reveal the last 5 characters of your Product Key. It’s pretty safe to state that these 5 characters would already be more than enough to find out which Product Key you have used (as you should already have safely stored the full Product Key code somewhere else together with your other license information).

You can run the vbs-file in the following way;

Open a command prompt. For instance via;

Start-> All Programs-> Accessories-> Command Prompt

Windows XP
Start-> Run;
cmd

Windows Vista and Windows 7
Start-> type;
cmd

In the command prompt, type the following;

Office 2010 (32-bit) on a 32-bit version of Windows

cscript "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\OSPP.VBS" /dstatus

Office 2010 (32-bit) on a 64-bit version of Windows

cscript "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\OSPP.VBS" /dstatus

Office 2010 (64-bit) on a 64-bit version of Windows

cscript "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\OSPP.VBS" /dstatus

Office 2013 (32-bit) on a 32-bit version of Windows

cscript "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15\OSPP.VBS" /dstatus

Office 2013 (32-bit) on a 64-bit version of Windows

cscript "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15\OSPP.VBS" /dstatus

Office 2010 (64-bit) on a 64-bit version of Windows

cscript "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15\OSPP.VBS" /dstatus

You should now get a screen with some license details such as the license name, type and the last 5 characters of the Product Key.

Changing Product Key for Office XP/2002, Office 2003 or Office 2007
Changing the Product Key for Office 2007 or previous requires you to go into the Registry.

Browse to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\<version>\Registration

Now is a good point to make a backup of that key;
Right click on the key, choose Export… and save the file to for instance your Desktop.

Expand the Registration key in the Registry and you’ll see one or more sub keys which contain a lot of characters between curly brackets; { and }
Each sub key stands for an installed Office application.
The proper name for this identifier string is called a “GUID”.

Click on the sub key to reveal its contents in the right pane.
The
SuitName
key will reveal the name of the package that you have installed. If you have multiple GUID sub keys listed, you can use this key name to determine for which installation you’ll be changing the Product Key.

In the pane on the right, delete the following keys;

DigitalProductID

ProductID

Close the Registry and start Outlook (or any other Office application); you’ll now be prompted to fill in your Product Key and activate Office again.

Delete the DigitalProductID and ProductID key to reset your Product Key.

Changing the Product Key for Office 2010 or Office 2013:

Changing the Product Key for Office 2010 or Office 2013 doesn’t require a trip to the Registry and can be done directly from the Control Panel or via a command line.

To change it via Control Panel, open the “Add/Remove Programs” applet (Windows XP) or the “Uninstall a Program” applet (Windows Vista or Windows 7). Locate your Office 2010/2013 application and press Change. Setup will now start with the option “Enter a Product Key” which allows you to enter a different product key.

You can also change the Product Key via the OSPP.VBS script. Instead of using the
/dstatus
switch, you must use the
/inpkey:value
switch where you should replace
value
for your Product Key.
For Example: cscript ospp.vbs /inpkey:xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx

Hope this will be useful...
If Skype users didn't have enough to worry about this week security-wise (with a worm spreading across the system), there's now another threat to warn about.
Emails have been spammed out by cyber-criminals, posing as messages
from Skype, claiming that you have changed your password on the service.
Here's an example of one such email (click on it for a larger version):

If you look carefully, you may spot that the spammers made a clumsy spelling mistake:

Password successfully changed
Your new Skype password has been set.
You can now view your attached call history and inscturtions how to change your account settings.
If the changes described above are accurate, no further action is
needed. If anything doesn't look right, follow the link below to make
changes: Restore password
Talk soon,
The people at Skype

Perhaps surprisingly, the links really do point to the genuine Skype website at skype.com.
However, a file (Skype_Password_insctructions.zip) is attached to the
email, and if you make the mistake of unzipping and executing its
contents (Skype_Password_inscructions.pdf.exe) you run the risk of
infecting your Windows computer.

The malware, which is detected by Sophos products as Troj/Backdr-HN, opens a backdoor onto your computer, giving remote hackers access to your system.

The danger is, of course, that users worried by the recent worm will
be frightened that their Skype password has been changed without their
consent, and open the attachment - and thus infect their PC.

As always, be on the lookout for unsolicited suspicious emails and
always be wary of opening attachments which arrive out of the blue. In
this case, the file is using the well-known "double extension trick" to
dupe the unwary into believing that they might be clicking on a PDF
rather than executable code.

ComputerWorld today reports that the UK's Metropolitan Police has warned Windows users of a malware attack that poses as a message from the computer crime-fighting cops themselves.

The ransomware attack attempts to lock the computer, and posing as an unofficial notice from a law enforcement agency, claims that the victim's PC has been determined to have visited illegal websites.

Only payment for a fine, claims the message, will restore the computer's functionality.

Various versions of the alert messages have been seen - here's one example:

Part of the poorly-worded alert reads as follows:

Attention!!!
The process of illegal activity is deleted. According to UK law
and Metropolitan Police Service and Strathclyde Police investigation
your computer is locked!
The following violation is detected: You IP-address "[redacted]".
Forbidden websites containing pornography, child pornography, Sodomy
and called violence against children on, violent material toward people
were visited from this IP-address!
Moreover and e-mail spam was sent you're your computer, emails
containing terroristic materials. This locking serves to stop your
illegal activity.
To release a lock your computer you should pay the fine in amount
of £100. In the case of ignoring the payment, the program will remove
illegal materials while keeping your personal information is not
guaranteed.

Of course, it's very likely that you haven't been visiting extremist
websites or viewing child abuse material. That may just be the hook
used by the fraudsters to trick you into taking the warning seriously. Ransomware is nothing new. We've seen plenty of examples in the past
where cybercriminals have duped users into coughing up cash in order to
get their computer working properly again.

But the threat of legal action, and what - on first glance - might
appear to some computer users to be a sign that they are in trouble with
the police, could be enough to scare some into electronically
transferring funds post haste.

The police recommend that anyone who is duped by the scam should
contact their credit card company immediately, and underline that they
would never use such tactics to make contact with the public or demand
funds.

It's likely that the messages are appearing on computer users'
screens because they have become infected whilst visiting compromised
websites, or have been duped into installing malicious software onto
their computer.

Sophos has linked Mal/Bredo-Q to some of the reports we have seen of
this particular ransomware attack, but of course it's perfectly possible
that malicious hackers could use other malware to display the same or
similar messages posing as police warnings.

As always, keep your security patches and anti-virus solutions updated, and your wits about you.

You’ve just opened a Web page or clicked a link in an email when your computer’s desktop goes gray. A browser window pops up with the FBI logo in the top left corner. Below it is a live webcam feed with a picture of someone’s face. You try to click away but find that your browser is locked. With a start, you recognize the face staring at you from the screen: It’s you.

This isn’t the plot of a Japanese horror film. It’s a frightening form of malware called “ransomware” that has been seen with increasing frequency in recent months. No one knows exactly how many people have been hit with it, but security firm McAfee reports that it recorded more than 120,000 new samples in the second quarter of 2012, a fourfold increase from the same quarter last year.

There are many variants of ransomware, all of which begin by locking you out of your own machine. The next phase: trying to blackmail, intimidate or otherwise spook you into forking over cash. You probably shouldn’t do it. But it’s easy to see why a lot of people do.

The version I described in the first paragraph is the product of a virus called Reveton, which you can contract either by clicking a malicious link or visiting an infected website, which triggers an automatic download. Beneath the video feed, which registers the surprise on your face as you recognize yourself, are your computer’s IP address and hostname and an urgent message: “Your computer has been locked!” Scroll further and you’ll find yourself accused of possessing illegally downloaded files in violation of federal copyright laws. (A new iteration claims that you’re in violation of SOPA, the Stop Online Piracy Act — which, as serious netizens know, never actually became law.)

The crime, you’re told, is punishable by a fine or up to three years in prison. There’s only one way to unlock your computer, according to the warning on your browser, and that’s to pay up. And if you don’t pay the specified “fine” within 48 or 72 hours — often by purchasing a prepaid cash card such as Green Dot’s Moneypak, which makes the transaction hard to trace — it claims that you’ll be locked out of your machine permanently and face criminal charges to boot.

The criminal charges are bogus, of course, but the threat of being permanently locked out of your files is real, says Chet Wisniewski, senior security adviser at the data-security firm Sophos. Some victims have reported that, after a certain amount of time passed, their files were in fact deleted. On the other hand, it’s unclear whether paying up actually helps, or if it just prompts the bad guys to try to squeeze more out of you. One thing security experts do know is that the scam appears to be automated. It would be a mistake to assume there’s an actual human on the other end whom you can persuade to take it easy on you because you really, really need those files.

So what should you do if you’re unwary and unlucky enough to contract a ransomware Trojan? First, instructs Sophos’ Paul Ducklin in a helpful video, don’t panic and don’t do anything rash. Once the malware has control of your machine, chances are that most of the damage has already been done. In theory the hackers could mine your files for private information, but in practice they rarely do. Too much effort for an uncertain reward.

And ignore those threats not to tell anyone about the attack. Unless you’re an expert yourself, it’s a good idea to enlist the help of a computer security expert to help you figure out how to handle it. The FBI — the real FBI — also recommends filing a complaint at www.ic3.gov.

As with most forms of malware, the best protection here is simply to avoid visiting compromised websites or clicking on any suspicious-looking links, whether on the Web or in emails, Twitter or Facebook messages, or even Skype messages. Keeping your operating system and apps updated with the latest security patches always helps, and anti-virus software can be an additional prophylactic. But this particular type of attack also reinforces the importance of backing up your files. Otherwise, you might never see them again.

It’s conceivable, some security types admit privately, that paying up could prompt the criminals to restore them. But the official advice is that you never should, and in most cases that’s the advice that makes the most sense.

Ever since Windows 8 Consumer Preview was released, many users have been itching to try out the shiny new operating system. Microsoft Inc. (NASDAQ:MSFT) has already confirmed that all Windows 7 applications will work on Windows 8. But what if you have upgraded your operating system (OS) to Windows 8, and are not comfortable in with the new OS?

It is always recommended to have a dual-boot between Windows 7 and Windows 8, instead of upgrading. Dual booting is very easy, as the user just needs to create a new partition and then install Windows 8 on that new partition. When booting, a user can select the OS that he wants to boot using the boot manager.

If your processor supports Virtualization technology, then you can also install Windows 8 on VirtualBox. This is by far the best method to try out any new OS without worrying about losing any data or creating a new partition.

If you have upgraded to Windows 8 from Windows 7, then unfortunately the only way is to format the system drive and re-install Windows 7. You can format the system drive in which you have installed Windows 8, which will protect all data on the other drives. Remember that formating the system will erase all your data, settings and everything.

In case you have installed Windows 8 on a separate partition, excluding the original system drive, then follow the below guide to downgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 7.

Disclaimer: ValueWalk is not responsible for any data loss during this process. We recommend backing up your important files before proceeding.

Follow the below tutorial to downgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 7

Step 1:

The first step involves removing Windows 8 from boot loader. To do this, you can use a free utility, EasyBCD. Download and install this utlility. Open the program (with administrator rights). From the sidebar, click on ‘Edit boot menu’. Select ‘Windows 8 Consumer Preview’ and click on ‘Delete’. Tick mark the checkbox for previous version of Windows to load that by default. Save the settings.

Step 2:

From the sidebar, click on ‘BCD backup/repair’. Select ‘Re-create/repair boot files’ and then click ‘Perform Action’.

This would remove Windows 8 from boot loader. Test it by restarting your system. If your computer directly boots to Windows 7, then you are set and its time to move to step 3. But if you are still able to see Windows 8 option in the boot loader, then follow the above process again carefully.

Step 3:

Now that we have got rid of the boot loader, its time to remove the Windows 8 partition. Decide whether you want to remove the partition and merge it, or whether you want to just format it. If you select the latter option, then all you need to do is to just right-click on that Windows 8 partition and click on “Format”.

However, if you want to merge this partition and extend the space, then you need to open Disk Management. Type “disk management” from the Start menu and press enter; select the Windows 8 partition. click on ‘Delete Volume’ and then click ‘Yes’ to continue. Right click on the free space and click ‘Delete Partition’m then click on ‘Yes’ to confirm. Now you will be able to see ‘unallocated’ space. Select the drive that you want to extend and right click ‘Extend Volume’. Click ‘Next’, and if you want to utilize all the unallocated space click ‘Next’ again. Click on ‘Finish’ to complete this process.

That’s all you need to do. Hope this method helps you to get rid of Windows 8.

Scientists have created the smallest petrol engine in the world (less than a centimeter long not even half an inch), small enough to power a watch or any small gadget. The mini-motor which runs for two years on a single squirt of lighter fuel is set to revolutionize technology associated with it. It generates 700 times more energy than a conventional battery. It could be used to operate laptops and mobile phones for months doing away with the need for charging.

Experts believe it could be phasing out batteries in such items within just six years. The engine, minute enough to be balanced on a fingertip, has been produced by engineers at the University of Birmingham. At present, charging an ordinary battery to deliver one unit of energy involves putting 2,000 units into it. The little engine, because energy is produced locally, is far more effective. One of the main problems faced by engineers who have tried to produce micro motors in the past has been the levels of heat produced. The engines got so hot they burned themselves out and could not be re-used. The Birmingham team overcame this by using heat-resistant materials such as ceramic and silicon carbide.

Regular LEDs can be turned into optical WLAN with only a few additional components thanks to visible light communication (in short, VLC). The lights are then not just lighting up, they also transfer data. They send films in HD quality to your iPhone or laptop, with no loss in quality, quickly and safely.Just imagine the following scenario: four people are comfortably ensconced in a room. Each one of them can watch a film from the Internet on his or her laptop, in HD quality. This is made possible thanks to optical WLAN. Light from the LEDs in the overhead lights serves as the transfer medium. For a long time, this was just a vision for the future. However, since scientists from the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications, Heinrich Hertz Institute HHI in Berlin, Germany, have developed a new transfer technology for video data within the scope of the OMEGA project of the EU, its implementation in real life is getting markedly closer.

At the end of May, the scientists were able to present the results of the project in Rennes, France. They were able to transfer data at a rate of 100 megabits per second (Mbit/s) without any losses, using LEDs in the ceiling that light up more than ten square meters (90 square feet). The receiver can be placed anywhere within this radius, which is currently the maximum range. "This means that we transferred four videos in HD quality to four different laptops at the same time," says Dr. Anagnostis Paraskevopoulos from the HHI.

"The fundamentals of visible light communication (VLC) were developed together with the industry partners Siemens and France Telecom Orange Labs," said the expert. At HHI, the team of project manager Klaus-Dieter Langer is now further developing the new technology. "For VLC the sources of light -- in this case, white-light LEDs -- provide lighting for the room at the same time they transfer information. With the aid of a special component, the modulator, we turn the LEDs off and on in very rapid succession and transfer the information as ones and zeros. The modulation of the light is imperceptible to the human eye. A simple photo diode on the laptop acts as a receiver.

As Klaus-Dieter Langer explains, "The diode catches the light, electronics decode the information and translate it into electrical impulses, meaning the language of the computer." One advantage is that it takes only a few components to prepare the LEDs so that they function as transfer media. One disadvantage is that as soon as something gets between the light and the photo diode (for example, when someone holds his hand over the diode) the transfer is impaired. Laptops, Palm devices or mobile telephones are all potential end devices.

The scientists emphasize that VLC is not intended to replace regular WLAN, PowerLAN or UMTS. It is best suited as an additional option for data transfer where radio transmission networks are not desired or not possible -- without needing new cables or equipment in the house. Combinations are also possible, such as optical WLAN in one direction and PowerLAN for the return channel. Films can be transferred to the PC like this and also played there, or they can be sent on to another computer.

The new transmission technology is suitable for hospitals, for example, because radio transmissions are not allowed there. Despite this fact, high data rates must be transmitted without losses and unzipped, according to the experts. If part of the communication occurs via the light in the surgical room, this would make it possible to control wireless surgical robots or transmit x-ray images. In airplanes, each passenger could view his own entertainment program on a display, saving aircraft manufacturers miles of cables. Another possible venue for the application of this technology are production facilities, where radio transmissions very often interfere with the processes.

Take up a programme that would give exposure both in the Indian condition and as well as in a university overseas, writes Sumit Bhattacharjee

When it comes to study abroad, why not take up a programme that would give exposure both in the Indian condition and as well as in a university in Europe.

The double degree programmes offered by Blekinge Institute of Technology (BIT), Sweden, gives such an opportunity.

BIT has signed MoUs with Andhra University, JNTU-Hyderabad and JNTU-Kakinada for two-year M.Tech/M.Sc. programmes in software engineering, signal processing and telecommunication.

As per the MoU the first semester will be taught at the Indian university and the remaining three will be imparted at BIT. While the Indian university will award an M.Tech degree, BIT will give a M.Sc. degree.

The Project Director of Blekinge, Velpula Gurudutt informs that the tuition fee is only Rs. 1.5 lakh, as BIT has exempted the tuition fee, which normally amounts to Rs. 14 lakh INR, from Indian students under the annual exchange programme.

“The students however have to arrange their living expenses, which normally amounts to about Rs. 4.5 lakh. The visa given is a residence permit, hence the students can also take up part time jobs,” he says.

According to Gurudutt, the students who intend to take up the dual degree programme need not write any qualifying examinations such as GRE, TOEFL or IELTS.

“If he or she has studied in English medium from 10+2 level, that is sufficient to process the application.” Each course caters to 10 seats.

Kiran Kishore and David Hempaul who recently passed out from BIT and AU with dual degrees in telecommunication and software engineering, respectively, say, “The quality of education is very high.

iPhone 5

It’s only a few months until the newest generation of iPhone hits stores and details about its features are slowly leaking out.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the fifth iteration of the best—selling smartphone will be thinner than its predecessor and have an eight-pixel, not five, camera. The paper quoted Apple’s suppliers, since the company does not manufacture the iPhone itself.

Two weeks ago, the Bloomberg news agency had reported about the improved camera, as well as about a faster processor. Apple has remained, as usual, mum about its new product, refusing to comment.

But the Wall Street Journal says the new phone will be released in this quarter. Bloomberg, citing informed sources, reported September.

Speculation has been ongoing for months about when the successor to the hugely successful iPhone 4 might hit stores. Until now, new models have been released around midyear, meaning the iPhone 5 is behind schedule.

But Bloomberg reported that Apple wanted to wait until its new iOS5 operating system was ready to go. That’s been promised for the autumn.

However, the Wall Street Journal reports that the iPhone 5 is especially complicated to build, because it’s so thin. That could also lead to delays.

The iPhone 4 was already thinner than the 3GS. The new iPhone will also reportedly include a new wireless chip from Qualcomm. Until now, those chips have been produced by Infineon. Officially, Apple has made no comments about its supplier. Infineon has sold its wireless chip business to Intel, which is getting into smartphones. If the company has indeed lost its contract, that would be a big blow.

There were 18.7 million iPhones sold in the first quarter of 2011 and sales expectations are very high for the new phone, reported the Wall Street Journal, citing an informed source. Projections are for sales of 25 million units by the end of 2011.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02934346331661125699noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-79735109973435345.post-41822909137344244792011-05-04T00:43:00.000-07:002011-05-04T00:43:16.121-07:00Pranav Mistry’s Sixth Sense Technology
Pranav Mistry’s “The thrilling potential of SixthSense technology” is a revolutionary technology that is going to change this world to a real digital sixth-sense world. At TED India Mysore (India), Pranav Mistry demos several tools that help the physical world interact with the world of data(digital world) – including a deep look at his SixthSense device and a new, paradigm-shifting paper “laptop.” In an onstage Q&A, Pranav Mistry says he’ll open-source the software behind SixthSense, to open its possibilities to all on next month itself. If you are interested in technology that is unbelievable, really you will be a fan of Pranav. This is one of the most viewed video in TED and is my most favorite video. Watch this, you never blame me for recommending this video. Feel free to comment about Pranav Mistry’s idea of sixth sense technology.

Engineered for Sound Quality

Reflecting Plantronics' nearly half a century of obsession with achieving headset perfection, the Voyager PRO+ represents the epitome of Bluetooth headset technology and design. No other headset has the combination of two noise-canceling mics on a boom to best capture your voice, three layers of WindSmart technology to outsmart the wind, and an adaptive 20-band equalizer tuned to maintain rich, balanced audio at comfortable listening volumes despite the noise around you.

The advanced AudioIQ² the advanced AudioIQ² noise-canceling technology in the Voyager PRO+, with its finely tuned adaptive 20-band equalizer, makes you sound like you're in the same room as your caller, not miles apart. To achieve this, AudioIQ² makes use of two microphones--one that's focused on your speech and the other that picks out distracting background sounds, such as road hum and construction noise--then compares data from the two mics and eliminates the unwanted sounds, leaving your unique voice free to be heard clearly and naturally, as it was meant to be.

The dual microphones are also stacked with three layers of WindSmart technology--stainless steel mic screens, acoustic fabrics, and an electronic filter in the mic circuitry--that aggressively block intrusive wind noise. The adjustable boom, which allows you to wear the headset on either ear, positions the mics where they can best capture your voice, further enhancing the sound quality. So regardless of whether it's the din of traffic or the whipping wind that you're up against, the Voyager PRO+ will ensure that you and your caller will be heard clearly and sound natural.

Extremely Comfortable, Durable Design

The Plantronics engineers involved in the design of the Voyager PRO+ were arguably a bit obsessive. After all, in designing the Voyager PRO+, they conducted no less than two dozen rounds of intensive human-comfort tests, a relentless study of skin sensitivity, and repeated drop-tests.

The result of this obsession is a soft and flexible, extremely comfortable headset that is durable enough to withstand the wear and tear of today's mobile professional.

QuickPair and Multipoint Technologies: Easy to Set Up, Easy to Use

Thanks to Plantronics' QuickPair technology, setting up the headset is quick and intuitive. The Voyager PRO+ supports Bluetooth 2.1 and EDR (Enhanced Data Rate) and Secure Simple Pairing (SSP), making it compatible with Bluetooth-enabled devices, including phones, PDAs, and laptop computers.

Researchers at University of California, San Diego have discovered that 485 of the 50,000 most popular Websites in the world are exploiting a flaw that lets them read your browser's Web history. The offending sites include YouPorn.com, Gamesfreak.com, Newsmax.com, and TwinCities.com, according to the researchers.

Called history sniffing, the combination of JavaScript and Cascading Style Sheet (CSS) properties enables the sites to figure out where you've been on the Web. The researchers' findings are published in a new study entitled "An Empirical Study of Privacy-Violating Information Flows in JavaScript Web Applications."
If you want to make sure you're protecting your Web browsing history from bad actors, read on to learn how history hijacking is done and how you can prevent it.

History Sniffing

CSS is a Web development language that controls many elements of a Web page's layout and is a commonly used tool among Web developers. One property of CSS is the "a:visited" property that displays visited Web links in a different color (typically purple) from links you haven't visited (typically blue). These properties are stored by your browser so that it can display the appropriate color for every link you come across on the Web.

What history hijackers do to find out where you've been is hide on their Web pages some invisible Web links to third-party sites such as Amazon, Twitter, and Facebook. Then the spying sites use a snippet of JavaScript code to find out from your browser what color the hidden links should have. After that's done, it's pretty straightforward to create a list of sites your browser has visited and sites it hasn't.

Who's Tracking

Although the researchers found 485 sites are exploiting the history-sniffing flaw, 46 of those sites are actively downloading your browser history. The researchers also found that another 17 sites for a total of 63 are transferring your browsing history to their network, but couldn't confirm the sites were using the information collected. The majority of sites, according to the UC San Diego researchers, are only inspecting the style properties and nothing more.

Reading over the researcher's findings, it's amazing to see how many hidden links are used by each site. About 18 of the offending 46 sites, such as Gamestorrents.com, FullTono.com, and PetitChef.com, are using the exploit to analyze your past visits to more than 220 sites. YouPorn.com, an amateur porn site and one of the 100 most visited sites on the Web, analyzes your browsing history for more than 21 sites, according to the researchers.

History sniffing is nothing new, but the UC San Diego study shows just how prevalent this exploit is. The researchers even say that some Web analytics companies such as Tealium and Beencounter provide history-sniffing services to their clients.

History-Sniffing Implications
It's easy to get carried away with the fear that your browsing history could be used for some nefarious purpose. One possibility could be building a profile about you based on your browsing history and other information collected by the site.

But there are also more benign uses of history sniffing that can actually make your browsing experience better, some Web developers argue. Blogger and Web developer Niall Kennedy points out that you can use history sniffing to determine which social networking sites you visit and show you "share" or "like" buttons only for those specific sites. Other uses include targeting you with your favorite blog aggregation service such as Google Reader and Netvibes, instead of showing you every RSS reader link on the planet. Or displaying mapping services you are more likely to use, such as Google Maps or Map Quest when you click a "show map" link.

There's no question, however, that having a Website target you in such a specific way can, as Google CEO Eric Schmidt might say, "cross the creepy line."

If you don't want your history sniffed or hijacked, there are several things you can do. Many modern browsers, including Google Chrome, Apple Safari, and Mozilla Firefox are able to defend against history sniffing. Internet Explorer may also defend against this attack if you use the browser in private browsing mode. If you want to make sure you are completely protected, you could also use the Firefox browser add-on NoScript that prevents sites from running JavaScript in your browser. Firefox users could also disable CSS visited links by modifying the browser's about:config file.

In addition to history sniffing, the UC San Diego researchers also looked at how major sites such as YouTube and The Huffington Post use scripts to track your mouse pointer movements. You can find the complete study here.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02934346331661125699noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-79735109973435345.post-41264178558174285802010-12-04T11:15:00.000-08:002010-12-04T11:15:10.123-08:00Sony Rolls Out Goofy Music Player: The RollyIs Sony's egg cracked? Japan never ceases to amaze me with its abundance of new gadgets. The most recent gizmo to come from Japan, the Sony Rolly, is no exception.

The Rolly is an egg-shaped music player that can flap and rotate its robotic wings, gyrate across the floor, and spin up a storm amidst a neon show of green and blue lighting.

In addition to playing back music from its internal memory the Rolly can also receive music streamed via a Bluetooth connection.

As far as I'm concerned the best part of the Rolly is its reported ability to analyze music and come up with the dance moves. Users can even program the Rolly's moves themselves.

The gadget is small enough to fit in your hand and comes standard with 1GB of internal memory (some 500 songs, though programing the Rolly with more complex dance moves will diminish that capacity), stereo speakers, and a five hour battery life.

It goes on sale in Japan on September 29 for equivalent of about $353 U.S.. No word whether it will make to the U.S. for sale. My fingers are crossed it will.

No, I'm not interested in buying one. As one whose music collection may be sorely lacking in danceable tunes, I couldn't see myself dropping $350 on the Rolly. With gadgets as susceptible to price cuts as they are these days, maybe Sony will cut the price sometime in October? In the meantime I'm hoping one of my friends will buy one instead so I can play with it.

If Sony's marketing campaign is any proof, it appears trying to imitate the thing on the dance floor is half the fun of owning one. Here is a link to an amusing commercial for the Sony Rolly airing in Japan where people try to keep pace with Rolly moves.

Finally a dance partner for Sony's Aibo robotic dog. Lets hope the robotic dog doesn't eat the robotic egg.
Responsible for groundbreaking design concepts for the latest models from the Volkswagen Group, the chief designer and his Audi Design Team have re-interpreted the design of the LEICA M9 just as he envisaged it. The outcome is a unique camera with a new interpretation of the characteristic features of Leica rangefinder cameras, which lends precision engineering, unique style and solid titanium to extraordinary formal design.

The LEICA M9 ‘Titanium’ is an especially desirable object for both Leica connoisseurs and aficionados of outstanding design. This special edition is strictly limited to just 500 cameras worldwide and is offered as a set together with a LEICA SUMMILUX-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH. lens, whose exterior metal components are also manufactured from solid titanium.

New features include the LED illumination of the bright-line frames in the viewfinder, removing the necessity for a standard illuminating window and making the front aspect of the camera even more balanced. The Leica logo has been restyled and is elaborately hand-engraved in pure resin, inlaid with white enamel, sealed with clear varnish and then polished and positioned centrally – directly above the lens.
